LIBRARY ASSISTANT POSITION

 

JOB OBJECTIVE: 

Performs a variety of clerical tasks as well as reference tasks.  Works under supervision of Assistant Director, but at times may work unsupervised and may be expected to solve problems and serve patrons independently.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Training and Experience:  Bachelor’s degree preferred, or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides a basic knowledge of library procedures.

 

HOURS: 24-32 hours per week, consisting of days, evenings, and weekends.

BENEFITS: One week paid vacation after one year of service, paid holidays off.

PAY:  pay range depending on experience and education

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

  • Basic circulation tasks: checking materials in and out, renewals, placing reserves, collecting fines and charges, etc.
  • Handles circulation questions and basic reference services in person or by telephone.
  • Covers the Circulation desk, Reference desk, and Children’s desk.
  • Assists patrons with the internet computers, public catalogs, and eBook downloads.
  • Sorts mail and distributes to the proper person.
  • Instructs and aids adults, young adults, and children in the use of library and reference tools; provides one on one assistance.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Aptitude and interest in library work.
  • Ability to meet, communicate and deal with people effectively, including staff.
  • Ability to keep records accurately.
  • Proven computer skills and other clerical knowledge.
  • Willingness to learn basic library procedures, rules, and other regulations as found in the library’s policy and procedure manual and other handbooks.
  • Knowledge of computers, software, and related technology.
  • Ability to lift and move up to fifty pounds.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time as scheduled.
  • Must possess or obtain upon employment a valid Ohio driver’s license.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Accountable for the performance of specific tasks which require independent judgment, maturity, and initiative in assigned areas.
  • Works with minimum supervision.
  • Develops a knowledge and understanding of basic library procedures and current technology.
  • Keeps informed of developments and participates in activities of professional and community organizations.
  • Makes recommendations for improvements in services and collections.
  • Attends monthly staff meetings.
  • Attends pertinent meetings or training courses and undertakes special training activities as directed. 
  • Other related duties may be required by the Supervisor. 

 

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

  • Work is performed in an office-like setting, but with need for considerable mobility; light lifting, bending, stooping, stretching, and sitting at a variety of desks and service points.
  • Must have keyboard skills, read print and on-screen information, answer telephone, and assist patrons who may have any type of disability.
  • Is sometimes the only staff member available to help patrons.
  • Must be available to work evening and weekend hours, including Sundays; schedules may be altered depending on the needs of the Library.

Page Position

Part-time, 12-16 hours a week, starting pay  $10.45 per hour.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Must be at least 16 years of age and able to work evenings and weekends as scheduled

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Sorts, arranges in order, shelves, straightens and helps maintain library materials

Copy Cataloger Position

Part-Time / Full-Time 

This position requires a strong working knowledge of MARC cataloging and

thorough knowledge and performance of all duties of a Library Assistant II position. At least two years experience in a comparable position is required.

Working knowledge of the Polaris ILS preferred. Competent in the use of Windows-based computer programs

DUTIES:

  • Process and catalog new materials and enter them into the
  • library’s database.
  • Identify cataloging errors and make the appropriate corrections.
  • Delete item records from database as requested by the Library Director.
  • Classify materials according to current Dewey Decimal rules and LC Subject Headings.
  • Attend workshops and/or training when requested.
  • Supports special projects as required
  • Other duties as assigned.
